A BBC interviewer was out in the street this week, asking for opinions about the BA strike. There would be the usual editing shenanigans going on afterwards. There was a woman speaking - I can't quote her exactly, but her words were to the effect that we’re all taking wage cuts, job loses, insecurity, and changes to our contracts. She finished with, “That’s just the way of the World”. I thought, that’s it then - is it? That’s the way of the World. We don’t ask questions, no discussion, no ideas - nothing. Just, “that’s the way of the World”. We just accept what’s handed down to us.

I thought, that kind of talk could get her elected this coming May. It’s not quite the stuff the electorate are looking for, if she wants elected, but it’s just the right attitude required by the party leaders to get her selected - and as you have to be selected, before you can be elected, well... you’ll get my drift.

Then I imagined a scene, with that BBC interviewer, at another moment in time. “So Mr Mandela, what do you think of apartheid?”

“Ah - well, that’s just the way of the World.”

Now, a clip like that wouldn’t end up on the cutting room floor either. They'd repeat it umpteen times that day, until a story about Jordan’s boobs, or Beckham’s metatarsal pushed it off the top spot. But as Mr Mandela had such a spoilsport attitude towards the way of the World, Margret Thatcher called him a terrorist and the rest of us hardly knew he existed, until the way the World was, was no longer sustainable as “the way of the World”.

I can just imagine that interviewer travelling back even further in time, and saying to William Wallace, “Er, could you put down that six foot sword for a moment Wullie, and tell the viewers what you think of these Plantagenets. Erm... is that steam coming out of your ears Mr Wallace? Don’t you think it’s just the way of the Wor...? Ha ya’ missed! What do you mean - don’t nod my head?” That one would end up on the cutting room floor, but Dennis Nordon might bring it back as one of his out-takes - after leaving plenty of time for the political fall-out to settle, which I suppose will probably be - never.

Then the Levellers - here’s what Ollie Cromwell said about them: "What is the purport of the levelling principle but to make the tenant as liberal a fortune as the landlord? I was by birth a gentleman. You must cut these people in pieces or they will cut you in pieces", (as opposed to bludgeoning them to death with that BBC microphone.) Ah well, that sounds close enough to, “just the way of the World”, so we’ll keep it off the cutting room floor.

What about the suffragette, Emily Davison? “Ms Davison, would you mind not disturbing the King’s horse for a moment, and tell the viewers what you think of the fact that you women are just too stupid to be trusted with the vote? Oh! Oh dear, oh, well... never mind. I think she was about to say, that’s just the way of the World - perhaps we could email Greg Dyke, and see what he thinks...” That should confound the editor. Maybe not, he’ll just edit out the bit about Greg Dyke.

Well, I could go on; and don’t I just. But I don’t want to because... well I just don’t want to - not today. Anyways, that’s the bailiffs at my door. I tried to explain to them, it’s not my fault I was sacked - and I can’t afford to pay the rent - that’s just the way of the World.

As though 'the world' is something we can't change.

Hi sheila b. Maybe she's happy the way the World is. Contentment is a fine thing. Anyway, the World changes whether we like it of not - or whether we have anything to do with the change.

Thanks for looking in on me again.

Good points, and 'it's just the way of the world' ranks alongside 'whatever' for non commentary.

In 'world' terms we oldies are called 'dinosaurs'and 'they' know they just have to await our demise to completely control the sheeple.

Meanwhile, if we raise our heads above the parapet, they will shoot us down with campaigns that discredit us, and 'they' will probably find 10,000 child porn photos on your computer if you really point a finger at them.... go figure, it's just the way of the world.

Thanks for writing, I'm in a block at the moment...

Hi aquasilver, I get a bit irritated when people just accept things too readily - on the other hand, I can understand why they don't want to rock the boat. Charlton Heston once said that he had played the parts of many heroes, but he wouldn't want to be one. Neither would I given some of the examples in this hub.

Thanks for looking in on me. It's about time I had a block; I should get off my rear and run around the block once in a while.

Thanks for this my Scottish friend! The way of the world is indeed a very poor excuse for not thinking. Thanks for sharing this and I for one am very grateful that Mr Mandela did not just accept apartheid as the way of the world!

Love and peace

Ha! I can always count on you to deliver a strong message with utter wittiness. Thank you for this pleasure.

Well James she seemed like a nice woman, and if she lived next door to me I’d trust her to look in on my cat, but I wouldn’t trust her in front of a TV camera again. If the public were all like her, Rupert Murdoch could sack his entire workforce. Mind you, if the public were all like me, nothing would be done for moaning about it. Thanks for looking in on me again.

Seems we are all in the same boat...because we sat and let it happen, and it won't get fixed, here in the US we waited too long, we have no idea even what is going on, for how long or why. Idiots are just left fighting over two parties, both of which are crooks and know exactly what is happening and giving us the same results, bleeding dry our money we put in to illegal immigrants who the government has made plain to the law not to touch while they murder, rape and are given what we the citizens have no rights to. What they don't give to them they send to everyone else, anywhere, everywhere. We are broke, we have no money, but they just print out some more, that's OK, they can do that.

Hi Pollyannalana I think whatever party gets into 'power' they can do very little with the status quo; the Markets and big business hold all the trump cards. Bringing cheap labour into a country is just a stick to beat down wages; it's a control mechanism. So is debt; people with debt problems don't argue with their bosses. Successive governments espoused these policies, and I think they did it to placate the banks, the multinationals and their ilk. It’s always nice to hear from you, thanks for your comment.

You did not have one vote on this, shame on me, so here's two. Long ago but I am still venting with less emotion. Found a great something today though to prove a point to people who say all I say is craziness, if you wanna have a look some time. Then I may get into the November poem thing a little anyway I am thinking. Have a few fun ideas and it is holiday time, may as well be happy.

Hi Polly,

That link doesn't work; it says, "Link not found".

Do you get all poetic in November? Ah well, as long as it makes you happy. We might as well be happy; we ought to make a point of it.

Sorry they pulled that one faster than a hot potato. It was someone driving through where illegals live high on the hog, not only Mexicans of course and as I am understanding it, in other things I read it seems to have been built only for them and at an estimated cost right now of 250 billion dollars so far. That may include checks we are giving them. welfare and SS which they say is legal for 5 and 10 year periods, I didn't catch all that. All nice expensive cars and SUV's which it popular with them I am supposing because of family size. I am sure it was legitimate but as Americans are starting to see the light the government and especially the one now hoping to be re-elected would be wanting to keep all this quiet although his own aunt was in one it was said but they claim she is living with family now in Cleveland fighting deportation..who knows? Sorry, I would really have liked you to see it.

It’s difficult for me to criticise other nationalities Polly, being, as I am, a Brit, and knowing that much of the wealth of the British Empire was plunder.

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana 6 months ago

I am not criticizing other nationalities, (why wouldn't they grab a good thing?) but our government, wondering what in the world they are up to. It is as if the whole government is destroying us and it is too late to turn back I am sure. Just very disheartening. Do we have a year..two? We are definitely over.

I don't think there are any bad intentions in what you write here Polly. It obviously matters to you, and that’s proof enough to me. But I too question the behaviour of governments and their corporate masters, who care not a jot about you or me, and seem to like it best when we’re at one another's throats.

Maybe we should all share of this World as much as we believe is fair and practical then after that, all we should expect to leave it with, is our reputations.

Pollyannalana profile image

Pollyannalana 6 months ago

I am sorry you feel my reputation may not be something to be proud of. I am very proud to always speak the truth and not be a yes person for points and popularity. I would certainly never win a popularity contest and would not wish to.

amillar Hub Author 6 months ago

Polly, I wouldn't want to judge you or your reputation; my own reputation, good, bad, or indifferent, is more than enough for me to deal with.

Sorry...don't know why I worry about things I cannot do a thing about.

As you say Polly, this World gives us much to fret about, but not much to gain from the fretting.
